14 ‘ Hurt’ – The Downward Spiral (1994) – Nine Inch Nails

  • shaky acst gtr plucking (dbled), vox is dry
  • chorus; piano thumping and low drums (no cymbals)
  • melodic, in contrast to other tracks
  • simple 1 2 3 4 beat
  • 2nd verse ends with riff fading out under vox
  • 2nd chorus: vibrato elc gtr, one note riff – becomes low note/chord
  • big climax: heavy gtrs
  • final chord sustains, feedback and distortion sustained (looped?) for a long time

  • main theme on acst gtr over the top, verbed – 2 mins of this intro
  • some of the loops drop out the moment the acst gtr strumming comes in, dbled and hard panned
  • then heavy gtrs, bass and drums come in, cutting out the acst strumming, plus screaming and spoken word
  • wobbly piano plays theme over it all
  • majority of this section (screaming vox, gtrs and drums) sounds muffled, like a bad demo tape
  • spoken word, hard left, is clear and hi fi in comparison
  • stops suddenly

  • plinky synth rhythm joins
  • drums and machine loops enter suddenly
  • vox and bass enter – bass is just one long note hold/throb/hum
  • chorus features big gtr chords, then (relative) pause – repeated 4 times
  • return to intro before 2nd verse
  • instrumental break before 2nd verse vox enters
  • middle section features loop from film strk (woman gasping, grunting)

  • starts with odd rhythm loop and murmuring sounds
  • heavy drums enter, gtr riff enters – build in intensity and volume
  • when vox enter it is sudden and everything changes – like 2 tracks stitched together
  • chorus brings back heavy drums
  • crunching gtrs join at the same time
  • noise builds up in climax – sudden end/cut to quiet ambient noise loop

  • instrumental, beautiful and moving.
  • pretty, almost sickly so, melodic/harmonic content made interesting through textural production
  • distant humming throbbing chords (like a guitar rapidily but softly jangled)
  • ascending melody on the same wobbly piano as previous tracks
  • descending chord progression against ascending melody
  • main chord progression, then 2 chord key change before returning to main chord progression is this new 2 step down key
